"Slowness is fundamental. If we loose the idea of slow flow, we lose the idea of quality, for sure."
Ezio Manzini, Doors of Perception: Flow (2002)
Context
SLOWEB grew out of the returns from the earlier project 'Queue Probes'. Queuing is generally viewed as an annoying necessity in daily life because people are obsessed with speed and efficiency. The Probe Returns however showed how some people actually enjoyed queuing for days for certain purposes. Queuing was part of the experience. SLOWEB responds to peoples' obsession with speed and efficiency when using computers, by providing an alternative to the fast global flow of information and rhythms of consumption.
This projects sits in the category of using design to make a social comment or make people aware of issues. How well is SLOWEB able to slow down the pace of peoples' life? - or at least make them aware of the possibility to slow down.
Aims and objectives
SLOWEB aims to introduce the value that slowness could have to hurried people working at computers - to offer an alternative way to experience life.
What does it mean when you have to queue to enter a website? And does it feel special to know that you are the only one using a service like Google at that time?
Description
SLOWEB offers these peripherals for the computer: a blind for the screen and a coffee mug as mouse. SLOWEB also offers these computer applications: a special slow mail service and a unique version of Google. Finally if you are on the move, you can use your mobile to call up a metronome to walk in time to; to slow you down.
